I would definitely start with some garlic, kale,cilantro, and other cold hardly since you are in the cold area. cilantro and kale come back year after year if you let some go to seed in the area you planted. they are super easy. garlic is very easy and you can use organic garlic cloves from the grocery store to get started. you can watch this nice video on how to grow garlic. https://youtu.be/C_1NFSCR58g
It talks about how to grow outside and also she does one in pots so depending on what your looking for.
