[MittleiderMethodGardening] Caring for Cherry Tomato
Hi Jim,
This is Brad from TN. I have about 2 each of 5 different varieties of cherry tomatoes. Should I prune them? Should I use the strings to encourage them to grow vertically? How do you prune them or do you?
Thanks,
Brad
Brad Group:
You need to know if they are DETERMINATE (Patio varieties) or INDETERMINATE (will continue to grow taller and taller) first.
Determinate or patio varieties are not pruned, except to keep the leaves off the ground.
Indeterminate plants - if you are hoping to maximize the yield in a small space - are planted in one row, 9" apart and then they are trained up a baling twine string to opposite sides of a T-Frame, and all sucker stems are pruned off.
I recommend you get The Mittleider Gardening Course book at www.growfood.com/shop This will teach and show you everything you need to know about growing tomatoes, as well as every other plant in your garden.
Best of success.
